Software Intensive Systems: Consolidation + Ecommerce

I led the UX for consolidating three acquired training businesses into one SIS experience, covering research, information architecture, interface design, registration, and checkout.

UL Solutions had acquired three companies over time, Method Park, Kugler Maag Cie, and kVA, each with its own brand, its own training catalog, and customers who trusted that name specifically. The problem was they overlapped enough that they'd started quietly competing with each other for the same customers. The fix was consolidating all three under one new identity, Software Intensive Systems, without anyone feeling like their brand got swallowed in the process.

It also wasn't a clean slate. SIS had to live nested inside UL Solutions' existing global navigation: parent logo, global bar, then a second SIS-specific nav underneath, which made this as much a negotiation with stakeholders as it was an interaction design problem. I led design across research, IA, UI, and the full ecommerce checkout, working closely with a content lead on taxonomy and a cross-functional group through multiple rounds of review.

Mapping the three existing experiences

Before designing screens, I mapped the three legacy experiences in Miro: where the offerings overlapped, how registration worked on each site, and where the journeys differed. That gave us a shared picture of what could be combined and what customers still needed to recognize from the original brands.

From sketch to structure

Every page started on paper before it touched a screen. These early drawings worked through course cards, registration steps, and checkout logic by hand, fast enough to throw away and redo without any attachment to the idea. Once a direction held up, it moved into wireframes, still black and white, still just structure, before any visual design decisions got made.

One checkout, three merged catalogs, and a first for UL Solutions

The ecommerce challenge was taking a customer from course discovery through registration, payment, and confirmation across catalogs that used to belong to three separate companies. UL Solutions did not have an existing ecommerce pattern for this, so I worked with the team and Stripe to shape how the payment experience looked and behaved.

SIS still had to live inside the larger UL Solutions site. The global navigation stayed in place, with a second SIS navigation underneath it. That constraint affected the information architecture from the beginning and required us to make the experience feel distinct without making it feel disconnected from UL Solutions.

Stages came through the acquisitions and needed a dedicated area inside SIS, with its own navigation for Overview, What We Offer, and Customers. The same information problem later showed up in Automotive SPICE, which led to an internal web concept and a customer mobile app for browsing the process model.
